WILDFIRE AUSTRALIA

Digital twin of Australian forest areas

  • Country Fire Authority (CFA) Australia
  • XVR Simulation

Two realistic wildfire simulation environments were developed for the XVR Simulation software for the training of emergency services of the Country Fire Authority (CFA) in Australia. XRCONSOLE created large areas near Melbourne, which were equipped with dense, lifelike vegetation. The digital twins of “Plenty Gorge” and “Strathewen” enable immersive scenario training for forest firefighting and demonstrate the performance of the XVR platform in combination with highly complex 3D environments.

A central challenge of the project was the authentic representation of dense vegetation on very large areas of around 100 km² each. To enable a realistic training experience, around 800,000 trees and bushes had to be placed for “Plenty Gorge” and around 1.5 million for “Strathewen”, while at the same time optimizing them to ensure the performance of the simulation. In addition, the environments had to be adapted precisely to the technical requirements of the “Wildfire” functionality/feature in XVR.

Working closely with the XVR team in Delft, XRCONSOLE developed a powerful solution that balances visual quality and system performance. Based on our recommendations, XVR implemented new features directly into the core software, including optimized systems to support vegetation movement in windy conditions. This not only enabled realistic weather conditions to be simulated, but also reliably implemented the complex requirements of the wildfire function. The result: two highly detailed and high-performance simulation environments that set new standards for realistic training in civil protection.
