ABSTRACT
ErgoXR is an immersive XR application for professional training in ergonomically correct lifting and carrying techniques. It combines digital learning content with VR and mixed-reality training to teach movement patterns in a realistic way and reinforce them safely. Developed in collaboration with an ergonomics expert from AUVA, ErgoXR is built on motion-capture (MoCap) reference movements—capturing both correct execution and typical error patterns. The result is a standardized, practice-oriented training solution that can be flexibly integrated into workplace safety and health programs.
CHALLENGE
Ergonomic lifting is often taught primarily on a theoretical level in conventional instruction formats. In practice, however, learners frequently lack opportunities to rehearse movement patterns repeatedly under realistic conditions and to recognize poor posture immediately. At the same time, in-person training is difficult to standardize, resource-intensive, and provides only limited objective feedback. As a result, unfavorable leverage, a rounded back, or incorrect rotational movements often remain unnoticed in routine workflows—raising the risk of overload, musculoskeletal complaints, and long-term absence from work. Moreover, traditional settings make it challenging to demonstrate typical mistakes in a targeted way without unintentionally reinforcing incorrect technique.
SOLUTION
ErgoXR enables structured, scalable, and safe training that makes ergonomic principles tangible through concrete scenarios. Users practice core lifting situations—from front-facing lifts and squat-based techniques to rotation and transfer tasks (e.g., stool-to-table, floor-to-table)—each presented as both correct execution and intentionally demonstrated incorrect variants. VR and MR support focused practice in a virtual environment as well as training in real-world contexts, such as directly at the workplace or in training facilities. Combined with practice and quiz formats, ErgoXR provides a consistent learning pathway that strengthens technique understanding, error recognition, and operational confidence—location-independent, efficient, and highly repeatable. Optional evaluations and structured debriefings further support reflection and help transfer correct technique into everyday work routines.
