Optimising Medical Emergency Response in Underground Settings

NIKE MED was developed to enhance the effectiveness of emergency responders during underground operations, particularly in large-scale incidents involving mass casualties (MCI). By combining realistic training exercises, an inter-organisational communication app, and psychosocial support recommendations, the project optimises emergency medical response. The app, developed based on user requirements, integrates real-time communication, geolocation services, and emergency protocols. This innovative system enables more efficient workflows and better preparedness for underground scenarios.

Underground operations are particularly demanding due to specific injury patterns such as poisoning and burns, as well as additional challenges like contamination and large crowds. Emergency response is further complicated by the need for coordination between multiple organisations and the lack of efficient communication tools. An intuitive and effective communication solution was essential to improve both safety and operational efficiency.

NIKE MED offers a comprehensive solution to optimise emergency response in underground environments. The developed app enhances inter-organisational communication and includes key features such as real-time messaging, location tracking, and integrated emergency protocols. Realistic training exercises and psychosocial components support both the technical and mental readiness of emergency personnel. The result: a sustainable improvement in the safety of affected individuals and the resilience of first responders, leading to more effective and safer underground operations.
